A recent study shows that Germany's birth rate has dropped to the lowest in the world overtaking Japan. The current birth rate is thought to be 8.2 babies per 1000. This compares to 12.4 for the UK, 21 in Oman and a staggering 50 in Oman showing a significant global difference in birth rates.
These figures are concerning for the future economy of Germany with predicted work force shortages and suggestions to increase immigration and encourage more women in to the workforce are being discussion by Angela Merkel's government.
This comes as a shock especially as Germany has some of the best maternity incentives in Europe! Look at the predicted population pyramid below to see what may happen in the future to Germany's population structure. What implications will this have socially and economically?
