Venice in trouble or thriving?

Venice is in crisis! The population has dropped by one third in the past 40 years and is continuing to shrink. Tourism, overcrowding and sky high living costs are forcing out more and more residents.

On Saturday, there was a city wide protest from residents about the governments handling of tourism in the city. Tourism is a double edged sword in Venice - in the short term it has made the city rich but in the long term it is killing it. One protester is quoted to say that Venice has a "toxic relationship with the tourism industry". Tourism is benefiting hoteliers and gondoliers and homeowners who are willing to rent their flats out but others are being forced out and it is causing significant conflicts. Read more in the article below and watch the short video clip for more information.

As a response to this crisis, Venice is now considering further limiting tourism numbers. See the article from just last week with proposals for new management strategies - a great addition to your case study on local tourism impacts and management strategies in an urban area.
