Italy's deadly earthquake - what do we know?

So what do we know

Date: Last Wednesday at 3.30am
Magnitude - 6.2
Death toll - 267 at present still increasing
Cause: Movement along a fault line caused by pressure between the converging Eurasian and African plates (What plate boundary is this?)
Impacts: Deaths, injuries, entire villages flattened, homelessness, many people living in temporary shelters, work/school closures, water and electricity supplies down.

Questions to ask yourself when reading further?
  • TOK - Do we always trust death toll statistics? How do we know?
  • According to our UN and IBDP definitions of disaster, is this one?
  • Why is Italy so vulnerable to earthquakes despite being a relatively developed country?
  • What are the government, international governments, locals now doing to respond to the disaster?
