The Complexity of Nationality

Our Grade 12 geographers decided to further investigate the complexity of the concept of 'nationality'. With students heading off in all directions for university next year, they are all anticipating the getting to know you question of 'where are you from?' to which the reply could be 'how long have you got?'  So what defines our nationality? Is it the passports we hold, where we were born, our parents nationality/ passports/ birth places, where we have lived for the longest or the place we feel most attached to? With many of our students having lived in multiple countries and sometimes never in the country that their passport links to, where do we call home?
