Is Oman facing a water crisis?

How do you teach a one year old the value of water? My little boy at the moment is obsessed with turning on the hose and spraying everything and everyone in its path. This is much to my horror because in addition to me getting drenched, this is also a profound waste of water in a country that is experiencing physical water scarcity.

Safe, good quality water supplies in Oman are decreasing. In 2005, studies highlighted a shortage of over 300 million cubic meters of water every year between replenishment and demand. With an increasing population, increasing tourist numbers, rapid development and few natural water supplies, Oman could be facing a very dry future.

So....

  • Where does Oman get its water from?
  • What does it use its water for?
  • What are the pressures on Oman's existing water supplies?
  • What can the government do to solve the problem?
These questions and many more are addressed in the web link below which is the 2012 UN report on water in Oman. Grade 11 and 12 this is directly relevant to your studies on water scarcity and makes for an excellent local case study.
